Broken records and nail-biting finishes: What you might have missed at the Olympics today

From CNN staff

Track and Field is fully underway in Paris with everything from nail-biting semi-final races setting up the drama tomorrow, multiple broken records in one event and thrilling finishes for gold.

Here’s what happened on the track and on the field on Wednesday:

  • Men’s 400-meter run: In the final meters of the race, American Quincy Hall overtook Great Britain’s Matthew Hudson-Smith in a thrilling finish, beating the Team GB runner to the line by .04 seconds. Zambia’s Muzala Samukonga won bronze.
  • Men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase: Morocco’s Soufiane El Bakkali charged down the final stretch to win the 3,000-meter steeplechase, chasing down Kenneth Rooks in the final stages after the American had led much of the final lap.
  • Men’s discus: Records were being broken one after the other in the discus throw. First, Mykolas Alekna of Team Lithuania broke the Olympic record that belonged to his father. The throw went 69.97 meters. That tops his dad, Virgilijus Alekna, who had a 69.89 throw 20 years ago in Athens. Then, minutes later, Jamaica’s Rojé Ston took the record for himself with a 70-meter throw — enough to take home gold in a major upset.
  • Women’s pole vault: Australia’s Nina Kennedy beat Katie Moon in the pole vault after the American failed two attempts at clearing 4.95 meters.

And here’s a look at how other events played out today:

  • Basketball: The USA women’s basketball team cruised past Nigeria to advance to the semifinals. They won 88-74. Two-time MVP A’ja Wilson had a dominant night with a game-high 20 points to go with 11 rebounds and two blocks.
  • Volleyball: Poland’s men’s volleyball team is gold-medal game bound for the first time since 1976 after a wild five sets full of epic back-and-forth play. They defeated the United States. Poland will play the winner of Italy and France’s semifinal match.
  • Sailing: Marit Bouwmeester of the Netherlands became the most successful woman in Olympic sailing after winning the women’s dinghy gold on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Australia’s Matt Wearn retained his men’s dinghy sailing Olympic title. The men’s dinghy race was initially abandoned midway through due to weather.
  • Weightlifting: China’s Li Fabin successfully defended his men’s 61kg weightlifting title and set a new Olympic record.
  • Skateboarding: Australia’s Keegan Palmer successfully defended his men’s park skateboarding title. He already had the gold medal in the bag by the time he was the last skater to compete on his third run.
  • Artistic swimming: Team USA was thrilled with their performance scoring a 271.3166, which put them in gold medal position for a brief time. But, China followed the USA with a more difficult routine and grabbed gold.USA finished in silver.Spain came in third.

USA has lead cut late on but cruises past Nigeria to reach women's basketball semifinals

From CNN's Matias Grez

After the USA had opened up a 30-point lead in the third quarter, Nigeria cut the deficit to 14 by the horn with an impressive fourth-quarter performance.

However, the late run was never going to be enough and the Americans cruised to an 88-74 win to reach the semifinals.

There was some drama late on as the USA took umbrage with Ezinne Kalu playing until the final buzzer and scoring a late layup, leading Kahleah Copper to receive a technical foul for petulantly throwing the ball at Kalu’s leg.

Two-time MVP A’ja Wilson had a dominant night with game-high 20 points to go with 11 rebounds and two blocks.

Promise Amukamara, Amy Okonkwo and Kalu impressed for Nigeria, registering 19, 17 and 16 points respectively.

Mykolas Alekna reacts to breaking his father's Olympic record and still only getting silver

From CNN's Kyle Feldscher in Paris
August 7, 2024, Olympics news and results | CNN (5)

Mykolas Alekna reacts after finishing second in the men's discus throw final in Paris, on August 7.

It was quite a few minutes of whiplash for Lithuanian Mykolas Alekna.

First, he set a new Olympic record to take the lead in the discus throw event, besting his father’s mark from the 2004 Games in Athens. And then, not long after, he was in second place and looking up at Rojé Stola of Jamaica, who had just topped his Olympic record and – eventually – his gold medal.

“I had an Olympic record for a few throws; it was great to break it. It was a great experience and I am happy to bring home a medal. I am not sad or anything, it is just pure joy. Of course, my expectation was to win, but sometimes, it does not happen. I am so glad for this silver,” he said after.

But when asked how it felt to break the record set by his father Virgilijus, Alekna only said: “I am happy with a medal.”

Sarah Hildebrandt celebrates after winning gold in the women's freestyle wrestling 50kg class in Paris, on August 7.

The USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt won gold in the women’s freestyle wrestling 50kg class with a 3-0 victory over Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzmán.

Hildebrandt had originally been scheduled to fight Vinesh Phogat in the final, but the Indian wrestler sensationally failed to make weight earlier on Wednesday, meaning Guzmán – who had lost to Phogat –was moved up into the gold medal bout.

It’s fair to say Hildebrandt couldn’t believe what she had done.

“Oh my gosh I just won the FREAKING OLYMPICS hahahahah DUUUUDE,” she wrote on X.

The bronze medals went to Japan’s Yui Susaki, who had never before tasted defeat until her stunning loss to Phogat, and Feng Ziqi of China.

USA's lead balloons to as much as 30 over Nigeria in women's basketball quarterfinals

From CNN's Matias Grez

The US’ lead grew to as much as 30 in the third quarter of its women’s basketball quarterfinal against Nigeria.

A buzzer-beating layup means the advantage will be 28 going into the fourth, but the Americans have been utterly dominant since the start of the second half and are well worthy of their 76-48 lead.

Taiwan boxer Lin Yu-ting wins 57kg semifinal bout to advance to gold medal match

From CNN's Wayne Sterling

Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting beat Esra Yildiz Kahramanof Turkey on Wednesday to advance to the women’s 57kg boxing gold medal match.

Lin won by a unanimous points decision (5-0) at Roland Garros Stadium.

After the bout, Kahraman opened the ropes so Lin so could exit the ring in a show of sportsmanship.

The 28-year-old Lin will face Poland’s Julia Szeremeta in the final on Saturday.

Lin finished ninth in this competition at 2020 Tokyo.

Alongside Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, Lin has become a flashpoint for an often misinformed debate about how women are allowed to compete in sports.

An overview shows USA's #15 Brittney Griner (Top C) go for a rebound next to Nigeria's #33 Nicole Enabosi (Top R) in the women's quarterfinal basketball match between Nigeria and USA today at the Bercy Arena in Paris.

Team USA is in complete control at halftime in its women’s basketball quarterfinal against Nigeria.

The star-studded squad is leading 52-33 at the break, but the US didn’t have it all its own way.

After the Americans opened up an early double-digit lead, Nigeria managed to reduce the deficit to just four points in the second quarter.

However, the USA’s quality began to shine through as the first half wore on. The team is being led by two-time WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart, who has a game-high 13 points at the half and has made five of her seven shots, including 2-of-3 from three-point range.

Nigeria’s Ezinne Kalu is having a game to remember with 12 points at halftime on 67% shooting.

August 7, 2024, Olympics news and results | CNN (8)

Soufiane El Bakkali of Team Morocco celebrates winning the gold medal in the men's 3000m steeplechase final at Stade de France on August 7.

What a thrilling finale to tonight’s action here at the Stade de France!

Soufiane El Bakkali charges in the final stretch to win the 3,000-meter steeplechase, chasing down Kenneth Rooks in the final stages after the American had led much of the final lap.

There’s a big concern on the western side of the track after Lamecha Girma of Ethiopia, who had been among the leaders the entire race, is being tended to by medical staff. Girma failed to clear a barrier about 200 meters from the finish line and landed extremely hard on the track.

The Ethiopian didn’t get up and laid on the track for several minutes after falling.

He’s carried off by medical personnel on a backboard and is being taken to the back.

El Bakkali rings the winners’ bell and goes off on his victory lap, celebrating with the Moroccans here.

Nina Kennedy of Australia tops Katie Moon of the USA to take gold in the women's pole vault

From CNN's Kyle Feldscher in Paris
August 7, 2024, Olympics news and results | CNN (9)

Australia's Nina Kennedy competing today in the women's pole vault final of the athletics event at Stade de France in Saint-Denis.

Australia’s Nina Kennedy is going to beat Katie Moon in the pole vault after the American failed two attempts at clearing 4.95 meters.

Moon had failed her first attempt at getting over 4.90 meters and then opted to pass the rest of that height, which meant she only got two opportunities to clear 4.95 meters. Kennedy passed the 4.90-meter height on her first attempt.

Kennedy and Moon both failed on their first attempts at 4.95 meters, which meant that it all came down to Moon’s last jump. If she cleared the bar, then Kennedy would have had to match her and clear it herself. But if she missed, she handed the Aussie the gold and would have to settle for silver.

Moon ran down the runway and planted her pole, but just couldn’t get her body over the bar. It fell to the ground and Kennedy began to sob as she was mobbed by her family in the stands.

Rojé Stonaof Team Jamaica celebrates after breaking the Olympic record during the men's discus throw qualification at Stade de France today.

Rojé Stona has just ruined the Alekna family’s plan for a party in Paris.

The Jamaican has topped Mykolas Alekna, the top-ranked discus thrower in the world and the owner of the world record. Stona takes home the gold and the Olympic record that Alekna held for a few short minutes earlier tonight.

Alekna had beaten his father’s Olympic record with a toss of 69.97 meters on his second throw of the competition. But just a bit later, Stona tossed the discus 70 meters even, setting a new Olympic record and doing enough to take home the gold.

The stage was set for Alekna to top Stona on his final throw, but the disappointing effort fell well short.

“It’s a very special night. It’s everything I wanted, but for it to actually happen, it’s a very good feeling,” Stona said post-final.

Stona finished 19th in the world championships in 2023, yet became an Olympic champion one year later, a feat that surprised even the Jamaican.

August 7, 2024, Olympics news and results | CNN (12)

QuincyHallof United States crosses the finish line to win the final alongside second placed Matthew Hudson-Smith of Britain and third palced Muzala Samukonga of Zambia.

The competitors are out for the men’s 400-meter final race and American Quincy Hall is the favorite here in an otherwise wide-open race

Running out of lane eight, Hall seemed to barely get out of a jog during qualifying for this race and feels likely to take home the gold here — possibly with a new world record.

The gun sounds and they’re off! A massive roar from the Stade de France crowd as 80,000 watch the first gold medal race of the evening.

Hall trails most of the race and is in sixth as they come around the final curve. But here comes Hall!

Charging down the final straightaway, Hall makes up ground quickly — the effort written on his face — and he’s suddenly passing runners.

In the final meters, Hall overtakes Great Britain’s Matthew Hudson-Smith in a thrilling finish, beating the Team GB runner to the line by .04 seconds!

On his unbelievable finish, Hall told reporters afterwards: “I was just thinking, ‘Get home, sir. Get home, sir.’”

As a result, it’s a gold for Quincy Hall, silver for Hudson-Smith and bronze for Zambia’s Muzala Samukonga.

Hall rings the victory bell here at the Stade de France and takes off his shoes to pose for a photo.

He grabs Old Glory and goes for a shoeless victory lap around the track here, being cheered as he goes. It’s an incredible moment for the American, who ran a personal best and led for only a tenth of a second in the race, leaning across the finish line to take the gold from Hudson-Smith.

The women’s pole vault field was once 20 — and it’s now down to five.

Wilma Murto of Finland, Aikaterini Stefanidi of Greece, Elisa Molinarolo of Italy and Eliza McCartney of New Zealand all failed to clear 4.80 meters, and their Olympics are over.

So far, Katie Moon of Team USA is in pole position to win the gold, having not missed a jump yet. World No. 1 Nina Kennedy missed one attempt at 4.7 meters, which could cost the Australian at the end of the competition.

The first tiebreaker, should two competitors both fail to clear a height on three attempts, is based on the number of misses earlier in the competition. The athlete with the fewest number of misses wins the tie break.

For some, the pressure and expectations might forge diamonds — andParis 2024has no shortage of this type of athlete.

Lithuaniandiscus throwerMykolas Aleknais poised to carry on the legacy of his father,Virgilijus, who holds an Olympic record in the same discipline.

His 69.89-meter throw in Athens 2004 guaranteed the then-32-year-old a second Olympic gold medal, having also won in Sydney 2000.

Despite Virgilijus Alekna cementing his family’s name in the record books, his son has already one-upped him, achieving a 74.35-meter throw in April that broke the longest-standing men’s track and field world record: Jürgen Schult’s 1986’s throw of 74.08 meters.

It was a record the elder Alekna was chasing his entire career and got close to only once: a personal record of 73.88 meters thrown just before the Sydney Games.

After successfully navigating qualifying, Alekna said his goal now is “to win the final.”

Australia wins gold after thrilling men’s cycling team pursuit final, claiming title for first time in 20 years

TeamAustralia's Oliver Bleddyn, Sam Welsford, Conor Leahy and Kelland O'Brien compete in men’s team pursuit today at Vélodrome National de Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines in Montigny-le-Bretonneux.

Australia won the gold medal in the men’s cycling team pursuit after a thrilling final with Team GB on Wednesday.

There was little to separate the two quartets as the race progressed, but an apparent error from Great Britain rider Ethan Hayter — who seemingly fell off the front of his saddle — meant Australia could ride home with gold in a time of 3:42.067.

After the race, TV cameras showed Hayter in tears, being consoled by his teammates.

It sealed a victory for the Australian team — made up of Oliver Bleddyn, Sam Welsford, Conor Leahy and Kelland O’Brien — for the first time in 20 years in the discipline. They last won it in 2004 in Athens, while Team GB has won it in 2008, 2012, and 2016.

The team had consistently been the fastest team at the Paris Games, setting a new world record for the event in the qualification period.

“It is pretty crazy to call ourselves Olympic champions now. We probably did not have these expectations when we started training together. To come together like we did in the last month was pretty special,” he added.

Earlier, Italy won the bronze medal, beating Denmark after a collapse from the Danes as the race approached its home stretch. It was the second time in as many Games that Italy have been victorious against Denmark in a medal race, after beating them in the gold medal race in Tokyo in 2021.

Poland are gold-medal game bound for the first time since 1976 after a wild five sets full of epic back and forth play.

It looked like it would go the US’ way when they won two sets back-to-back, but Poland, on their death bed at the end of the fourth set, stole all the momentum and rode off that through the 15-point final set.

Never out of it, the US fought off three match points but could not overcome Poland on the fourth.

Both teams await the winner of Italy and France’s semifinal this afternoon.

The US will play for bronze on Friday at 10 a.m. ET and Poland will play for gold on Saturday at 7 a.m. ET.

Quincy Hall of Team United States competes during the Men's 400m Semi-Final on day eleven of the Paris Olympic Games 2024 at Stade de France on August 6.

Bonsoir from the Stade de France outside Paris where four gold medals are up for grabs tonight in track and field.

Here’s what we’re watching tonight:

  • Men’s 200-meter run semifinals: American Noah Lyles is back on the track after winning the 100-meter sprint on Sunday night, looking to cruise into the finals of the race that is his specialty. Lyles is looking to get three — maybe four — gold medals at these Games.
  • Women’s pole vault: It’s a showdown between world No. 1 Nina Kennedy of Australia and No.2 Katie Moon of the USA. Kennedy and Moon have had epic showdowns in the past, including sharing the world championship last year in this competition.
  • Men’s discus throw: Mykolas Alekna of Lithuania is looking to take the gold, having set the world record in this contest earlier this year. If he’s able to do that, he’ll match the feat that his father, Virgilijus Alekna, accomplished in 2000 and 2004. Mykolas will undoubtedly be looking to break his father’s Olympic record throw of 69.89 meters as well, which is almost five meters shorter than his current world record.
  • Men’s 400-meter run: American Quincy Hall is debuting in the Olympics and looking to potentially set a new world record after easily qualifying for the final with a 43.95-second time. The current world and Olympic record was set in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro by South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk.
  • Men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase: Runners will need to go over large barriers and through water to win this one. World No. 1 Soufiane El Bakkali of Morocco will hope to get gold, but world record holder Lamecha Girma of Ethiopia will also be on the hunt.

Members of the US Olympic figure skating team pose for a photo in front of the Eiffel Tower on Wednesday after receiving gold medals following the disqualification of Team Russia for doping after the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing.

They say good things come to those that wait – and the wait has certainly been worth it for the USA’s figure skating team.

At the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, the US finished second behind the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) in the team event, with Japan coming third.

However, after Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva had a doping test come backpositive for the performance-enhancing substance trimetazidine, no medals were awarded.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) then handed down a decision todisqualify Valieva of “all competitive results” achieved since her positive test, and announced the US and Japan would move up to first and second respectively.

Instead of receiving their medals in front of empty stands in Beijing, though, Team USA had their golds placed around their necks at a packed Champions Park in Paris today.

A huge roar went up from the crowd as the skaters held their medals and bouquets aloft.

The Japanese team members – who were awarded their silver medals alongside the USA and emerged from the tunnel with beaming smiles while doingthe conga– stepped off the platform to allow the Americans to have their gold medal moment.

Skateboarding at this year’s Olympic Games has seen some of sport’s best and brightest talent shine on the world’s biggest stage.

Fourteen-year-old Arisa Trew won gold in the women’s skateboarding park event on Tuesday. The event also saw 15-year-old Cocona Hiraki finish second and 16-year-old Sky Brown complete the podium with a bronze medal.

In the men’s skateboarding park event, there is also a competitor defying the odds and age-based expectations – just at the complete other end of the spectrum. What he lacks in youthful exuberance, 51-year-old Andy Macdonald more than makes up for in experience.

Macdonald, representing Great Britain at the Olympics, is somewhat of a skateboarding icon. He has a record 23 X-Games medals in skateboarding, has skateboarded through the White House and is also good friends with the iconic Tony Hawk – who made the trip to Paris to see Macdonald skate.

While Macdonald did not advance to the men’s park final, he seemed to have a brilliant time skating in front of a packed crowd and proved to millions around the world that age is just a number.

Win an Olympic gold medal and some might want a new car or a new phone from their parents or sponsors. But for 14-year-old Arisa Trew, she had a different gift in mind.

Trew, who won skateboarding gold in the women’s park event to become Australia’s youngest ever Olympic champion, revealed that she’d asked her parents for a pet duck if she won the Olympic title.

“My dad’s been like saying yes this whole time, but my mom was saying no,” she told 10 Sport. “But then I said, ‘If I did win, could I get a duck?’ And she said yes.”

What does someone do with a pet duck? Well, Trew already has some ideas in mind. “I’m going to take the duck to the skate park as well and take it on walks.”

But aside from the promise of a mallard mascot, just having her parents in Paris has been reward enough.

“It was really cool having my parents here because I was just really excited to have them there and watch me skate because they’ve been there through all my training,” she said.

“They’ve taken me to the skate park at like 9 p.m. some nights. It’s just like late night and all this effort and them supporting me through it all, taking me everywhere around the world. It’s just amazing to have them see what I’ve done.”

Trew also revealed that members of her skateboarding school back in Australia, Level Up, slept out in the skate park to watch her win gold.

Katie Ledecky competing in the mixed 4x100m medley relay final on day eight of the Olympics at Paris La Defense Arena on August 3.

Katie Ledecky is only 27 years old, so has many more years of racing ahead of her. But, inevitably, her reign of dominance will have to end one day.

The American swimmer, though, told CNN that she wants to stay involved in the sport for as long as possible, even after retiring.

Given she is one of the greatest swimmers in history – not to mention the most decorated female US Olympian of all time – few would be better placed to take up a coaching role in Team USA.

However, having seen the sacrifices her own team makes to help her achieve her dreams, she’s unsure whether a career as a coach is for her. Although, she didn’t totally rule it out.

“I’ll always be attached to swimming in some respect,” she added.

Behind every Olympian stands a support network that has had to make sacrifices for their loved one to achieve on the global stage.

For Katie Ledecky, it was her parents who helped lay the foundations for her incredible career.

In her interview with CNN, the American swimmer paid tribute to those early years when her parents would wake up at the crack of dawn to ferry their child to training.

Ledecky comes from a family of high-achievers. Her father David is a Harvard-educated lawyer and her mother Mary Gen was a collegiate swimmer. Her uncle Jon co-owns the NHL’s New York Islanders, while her brother also graduated from Harvard.

Speaking to CNN Sport’s Coy Wire, Ledecky said the atmosphere in Paris was made all the more impressive considering the lack of crowds in Tokyo three years ago due to Covid-19 restrictions.

“The energy here in Paris has been incredible,” she said.

World record tumbles twice in men’s sprint cycling qualifying

From CNN's Ben Morse

First Matthew Richardson and then Harrie Lavreysen.

The world record was broken twice at the National Velodrome in Paris as qualifying for the men’s sprint cycling event took place.

The beginning of the heat stage of the men’s sprint will be held later on Wednesday.

From CNN's Ben Church

After the first men’s 5000m heat ended with athletes strewn across the track, the second heat almost saw a repeat.

With four laps left to go, the athletes were bunched together as they took the first bend.

However, seemingly focused on filming the javelin event taking place at the same time, an operator unwittingly walked straight into the path of the runners.

Fortunately, everyone was able to avoid a collision and stay on their feet, but it did force many to take a break in their stride.

Poland's Aleksandra Mirosław celebrates on the podium during the medal ceremony for the the women's sport climbing speed competition on Wednesday.

Aleksandra Mirosław has just made Olympic history at the climbing wall in Le Bourget, winning the first-ever gold medal in speed climbing.

The Polish athlete, who set a world record in qualifying, defeated China’s Deng Lijuan in the women’s final with a time of 6.10 seconds – 0.08 ahead of Deng and 0.04 off her world record.

Mirosław explained that making history as the event’s first Olympic champion “means a lot.”

In the bronze medal race – here called the “small final” – another Polish climber, Aleksandra Kałucka, won the bronze medal against Indonesia’s Rajiah Sallsabillah.

An error ultimately derailed Sallsabillah’s chances, allowing Kałucka to cruise to victory in 6.53.

Climbing made its Olympic debut in Tokyo three years ago, but this is the first time that speed climbing is being contested as a medal event on its own; the other discipline at these Games is boulder and lead.

Paul O'Donovan, left, and Fintan McCarthy of Team Ireland celebrate with their gold medals after winning the men's lightweight double sculls A final at Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium during the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games on August 2.

You might expect an Olympic champion would travel in style upon their return home with gold medal in tow.

But that wasn’t the case for Ireland’s men’s lightweight double sculls champions, Fintan McCarthy and Paul O’Donovan.

Having arriving back at Dublin Airport, the duo had planned to get the bus to Cork with all their gear, a journey of about 160 miles. But a fan who had been on the same flight from Paris took pity on them.

The man, identified only as Ciaran, offered McCarthy and O’Donovan a ride in his car after meeting them on the flight. And despite the pair acknowledging the multitude of bags they had with them, off they went.

As McCarthy put it in a comment on Dublin Airport’s Instagram post about their arrival in Ireland: “Ciaran coming in clutch.”

Both rowers are from Skibbereen in County Cork.

Mutaz Essa Barshim pulls up with apparent injury in high jump qualification, recovers to make final

Mutaz Essa Barshim from Qatar receives medical treatment during the high jump qualification at the Stade de France on August 7.

Olympic champion Mutaz Essa Barshim gave fans in the Stade de France a scare when he pulled up with an apparent injury during high jump qualification.

The Qatari athlete was attempting to clear 2.27m at the first time of asking but didn’t even attempt his jump, going to ground on the field inside the stadium clutching his right leg.

Who was first to check on Barshim? His friend and co-gold medalist in Tokyo, Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi. The two jumpers shared the gold in the Japanese capital in a historic moment where they both opted to not continue with a jump-off.

Thankfully, for Barshim, he was able to recover and clear the height on his second attempt, though he appeared to still be troubled by the injury, immediately grabbing at the leg after the jump.

It remains to be seen whether the injury will affect his participation in the final.

Tamberi, meanwhile, failed to make 2.27 on all three of his attempts but still advances to the final having cleared 2.20 and 2.24 with a clean record.

Chaos in the men's 5000m heats as athletes tumble to the track

Thierry Ndikumwenayo of Team Spain, Dominic Lokinyomo Lobalu of the Refugee Olympic Team, George Mills of Team Great Britain (C) and Mike Foppen of Team Netherlands fall to the ground during a heat of the Men's 5000m at the Stade de France.

There is simply never a dull moment at this year’s Olympics.

What started off as a routine heat in the men’s 5000m event, ended in utter chaos as multiple athletes were left strewn over the track.

The race had been heating up slowly and then sprung into action as the runners approached the final lap.

Just as the athletes took the bell, Canada’s Mohammed Ahmed fell down, leaving him way behind the leading group which raced on frantically to the finish line.

But that was just a taste of things to come.

As the leaders swung around the bend onto the home straight, four men were sent flying to the track.

The incident seemed to start with a tussle between Team GB’s George Mills and France’s Hugo Hay, and resulted in the British runner bumping into two runners on his outside. All three men fell to the track, tripping up another runner behind them.

“I got stepped out on. I was about to kick in the home straight and, boom, the French lad took me down,” Mills told BBC Sport after the race.

Great Britain's George Mills and France's Hugo Hay react following the men's 5000m heats at the Stade de France on August 7.

Mills was clearly annoyed at Hay and angrily confronted his rival at the finish line, shrugging off the Frenchman’s attempts at reconciliation.

When asked what he said to his opponent, Mills added: “I’m probably not allowed to say.”

Hay finished seventh and was one of eight men to qualify for the final, while Mills eventually crossed the line in 18th after picking himself up off the floor.

After a series of appeals, Mills, Mike Foppen, Thierry Ndikumwenayo and Dominic Lokinyomo Lobalu have all since been added to the final after the falls.

Jonathan Owens on "once in a lifetime opportunity" watching wife Simone Biles in Paris

Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens attend a game between the Houston Rockets and the Los Angeles Lakers at Toyota Center on January 29, in Houston, Texas.

While Simone Biles always looks like the coolest person in the room every time she performs, it turns out watching the 11-time Olympic medalist as a loved one is a nerve-wracking experience.

In the latest episode of HBO’s Hard Knocks, Biles’ husband – Chicago Bears safety Jonathan Owens – headed to Paris to watch his wife represent Team USA on the world’s biggest stage.

Before he boarded the flight to the French capital, Owens video called Biles where the gymnast said hello to her dogs and reminded her husband on Europe’s rules on bringing liquids past airport security.

“I try to remember her routines, so it’ll be like random times she’s on the floor and she does something, and I try to be up there [mimics a dance move] and like knowing the piece, just so I know what’s going on.”

But as for millions of spectators around the world, watching Biles on beam is a more stressful experience for the NFL player.

“I’m just sitting there watching and especially when she’s on beam, oh my gosh, beam like trips me out. I’m like ‘Babe, there’s no way y’all are like doing flips, just landing on it.’ But landings, all this type of stuff and I’m just watching like [deep inhale].

Hard Knocks then shows Owens in the stands watching with the Biles family, keeping score of the events and cheering at every opportunity for the record-breaking star before heading back home where he supports Biles from the sofa.

South Africa's silver-medallist Midian Leah Ganyaza, aka B-girl Midian Leah, Morocco's gold-medallist Fatima Zahra El Mamouny, aka B-girl Elmamouny, and Algeria's bronze-medallist Maessane Boumedjane, aka B-girl Maessane, pose on the podium after the WDSF Breaking Continental Championship Africa, in Rabat, Morocco, on May 13, 2023.

For Moroccan b-boy Bilal Mallakh and b-girl Fatima El-Mamouny, the Paris Games will always hold a special significance. They’re the first Olympics to feature the sport of breaking, and the Moroccan pair are the only Africans competing in the discipline.

Mallakh and El-Mamouny earned their ticket to Paris by winning their respective finals at the inaugural World DanceSport Federation’s (WDSF) African Championship in Rabat in May 2023.

El-Mamouny says the biggest challenge so far is training with the rigor of an Olympic athlete while keeping the essence of breaking in each performance. “We’ll encounter several difficulties like any athlete on the eve of the Olympics, but I’m not going to give up. It’s both stressful and exciting,” she added.

Breaking – or breakdancing, as it is most commonly known – originated on the streets of New York’s South Bronx in theearly 1970s. Dancers would show off their moves during percussion “breaks” in songs played at clubs and block parties, giving the discipline its name.

Belgian Claire Michel pictured in action during the women's individual triathlon race at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, on July 31.

The Belgian triathlete who fell ill after swimming in the women’s race says that she did not contract E.coli.

In a post on her Instagram page Tuesday, Claire Michel said she felt the need to “clarify a few things” following “conflicting information.”

“Blood tests showed that I contracted a virus (not E. Coli),” Michel said, adding that after three days of vomiting and diarrhea, she ended up needing “significant” medical attention at the Polyclinic in the Olympic village.

Michel did not specify the virus she contracted.

On Sunday, the Belgium Olympic Committee announced that its team was dropping out of the triathlon mixed relay race after Michel fell ill.

The statement did not specify Michel’s illness but had pointed words that appeared to be aimed at organizers: “The COIB and Belgian Triathlon hope that lessons will be learned for future triathlon competitions at the Olympic Games such as guaranteeing training days, competition days and the competition format, which must be clarified in advance and ensure that there is no uncertainty for the athletes and support personnel.”

Michel, who has now returned to Belgium, said she is “gradually” doing better.

The triathlon races took place in the River Seine after water quality results were deemed “very good” by the organizers. The marathon swimming races are also scheduled in the Seine for Thursday and Friday.

Marathon swimmers were cleared to enter the water to train Wednesday morning in the French capital, a day after organizers canceled a training session due to “water quality concerns.”

Paris 2024 said in statement Wednesday that the latest test results “have been assessed as compliant by World Aquatics,” allowing for the familiarization session to go ahead.

During these Olympics, Biles faced comments online about her appearance, specifically her hairstyle.

She hit back at those critics in an Instagram post and had a message for young girls around the world who have faced similar disparaging comments.

“You guys are beautiful, confident,” she said.
