Duquesne surges to victory over Slippery Rock
Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University women's soccer team stayed perfect at Rooney Field Monday, posting a 7-0 victory over Slippery Rock. The Dukes improved to 3-1 (.750) overall during the 2024 season with the win.
POINTS OF EMPHASIS
Duquesne took control midway through the first half, scoring three goals in the span of five minutes and 18 seconds. Opening the scoring for the Dukes was junior Mackenzie Muir, who slid one past Leah Allman at 18:59 to push Duquesne in front. Junior forward Brianna Moore followed, coming off the bench and scoring twice in a minute-and-a-half to break it open. Moore's first goal came on a feed from junior Margey Brown, and her second came on a putback, as Allman blocked a shot from Brown before Moore corralled the free ball and put it in the back of the net.
FOUR-FOR-FOUR
Brown had a direct impact on the offense Sunday against Slippery Rock, recording an assist on three goals. She got in on the act putting one away early in the second half, giving Duquesne a 4-0 lead with her sixth marker of the year just 29 seconds after the break. In four matches, Brown has racked up 16 points, which ranks among NCAA Division I leaders. She is the first member of the Dukes to score a goal in four consecutive games since Katie O'Connor (2015-18) during the 2017 season, and her 16 points are the most in a four-match span in school history. Brown owns 16 points on 17 shots, including 11 on goal.
AWAY WE GO
Duquesne finished with 20 shots in the first half and accrued 37 overall in the contest, including 25 on goal. It marks just the third time the Dukes have registered at least 30 shots in a contest and is two off the school record of 39, which came in the program's first game as an NCAA Division I program exactly 29 years ago. In a 9-1 win over Robert Morris Sept. 2, 1995, Duquesne fired off 39 shots. Duquesne also finished with 31 shots in a 6-1 win at Saint Francis Oct. 30, 1997. In all, 11 different Dukes finished with at least one shot Sunday, including eight from Moore, seven by Brown and five from Muir.
HOME SWEET HOME
The Dukes improved to 3-0 at home and have outscored their opponents during that span, 15-2. Duquesne owns a record of 8-2-2 (.750) at Rooney Field since the beginning of the 2023 season, a span in which the Dukes have scored at least three goals on five occasions at least five goals three times.
SEALING THE DEAL
Picking up her first NCAA goal to cap the scoring Sunday was junior midfield Emma Hospodka, who took a perfect ball from freshman Zoe Fries just outside the top of the box and fired one that sailed into the upper left corner, just out of reach of the outstretched arms of Allman. The marker for Hospodka came at 88:41 and followed a pair of goals from redshirt freshman Hailey Longwell, who picked up her third and fourth goals of the season in the second half. Longwell scored unassisted at 61:03 and less than five minutes later took a cross from Brown before sinking her fourth of the year. Longwell owns five shots on goal this season, four of which have found the back of the net.
