What does Nintendo Switch serial number tell you? ›

For software, the serial number is the product key or product code; it is the authorization for a certain user to use the software. The Switch serial number refers to the unique identifier of a Nintendo Switch console/controller.

Find the serial number on the white sticker at the bottom of your system. Serial numbers for Nintendo Switch systems released in the Americas begin with either "XAW" or "XKW". Scroll down the menu on the left-hand side and select System, then Serial Information.

Both the serial and model numbers potentially open you up to warranty fraud. Basically, someone with both these numbers might be able to put in a fake warranty claim. They could order replacement parts under your warranty, potentially using it up if there are limits.

Scroll down the left-hand side of the menu and select "System" > "Serial Numbers". The serial number should appear at the top of the list. You can then check whether or not the two numbers are identical. If they're not, chances are you're looking at a counterfeit console.

Note: Original Nintendo Switch models start with the letters HAC. Additionally, when holding the new Nintendo Switch in your hands, check the model number on the back. The new Nintendo Switch has a number that should read HAC-001 (-01), while the original has a model number of HAC-001.
