The people found a good place to live, they began to chop down the trees and eat the animals. After several hundred years, there wasn't enough forest for animals to breed, nor enough animals to eat. The essay notes at the end that even the birds nested only on safer offshore rocks and small islands (to be safe from the people who would raid the nests).
